As a Social Worker and a Family Futures Associate with 40 years experience of working for County Councils and several London Boroughs, I am fully aware of the opportunities, frustrations and challenges facing social workers in Local Authorities.

I have worked in Children’s Teams, in Family Placement Teams and, in more recent years, I have managed an Adoption Team. I also specialised in Adoption Support Services for 14 years. During this time I became acutely aware of the limited amount of time social workers were able to devote to life work.  Tight schedules and time restrictions meant that life work was rushed and many of the life story books written for children were confusing and not child focused.

In the 1990’s I began reviewing the purpose and suitability of life story books. This eventually resulted in my book, Life Story Books for Adopted Children. A Family Friendly Approach, and to the expanded version, Life Story Books for Adopted and Fostered Children.

This simple approach to constructing Life Story Books helps children to understand their history and develop their sense of identity whilst remaining honest, engaging, playful and, perhaps most significantly, child friendly.
